Action

This is an episode with an emphasis on action scenes, big setpieces, and the like.

467 – Apocalypse Keys with Kieron Gillen

Kieron is the writer behind some of my favorite comics, including Young Avengers, Journey Into Mystery, and The Wicked + The Divine. His latest works include The Power Fantasy, about the six superpowered individuals with the power to singlehandedly destroy the planet, and Die Loaded, the sequel to his incredible comic book/RPG combo Die, about a dark fantasy roleplaying game come to life.

We sat down for some monstrous superhero mystery in Apocalypse Keys, about the demonic agents of a massive organization tasked with stopping the end of the world. DIVISION is calling, monsters. Do you answer? Or will you become the Harbinger youself?

460 – Mirror Match with Jackson Adams

Mirror Match is a role-playing game love letter to fighting games. Players create warriors based on shared themes and origins before facing off in arena combat. Inspired by two-player fighting games, sessions see new characters constantly enter the fray and the game provides scaffolding to create your own universe of mad ninja, shotgun-toting wizards, dragon-gods, and more. All of those characters will face off in the viscera-soaked court of Bloody Mary and only you can decide how they’ll fare in her wicked gaze.

I sat down with the game’s designer, Jackson Adams, to see the game in action.

Currently, he hosts Never Post, a member-supported, employee-owned podcast about and for the internet, and GMs Fun City Ventures, a fully sound designed cyberpunk narrative play RPG podcast set in a post climate catastrophe New York City, in the year 2102. We sat down to engage in the cat and mouse drama of a criminal and investigator in Catch Me If You Can, to try and answer the question:

What is a criminal, if not a mirror-image of a detective? And what is a crime, if not the setup for its investigation?
